Selling this for my mother, who has had it since before I was born. I don’t know anything about furniture. What sort of wood am I looking at? What is an old bed worth?

The bed is marked “ROUND END BEDS W.F. CO” and the headboard has the number “136" on it. Google has not been helpful, other than to find an old ebay auction for a W.F. CO bed, purported to be of 1920's vintage, selling for $249. I was just going to put it on CL, but if that other one got six bids on ebay, I might list it there instead.

There must be furniture appraisers here in Austin. Give one a call. It might be worth something, it might now. Best to be sure.

That looks a lot my antique bed and dresser , although a bit fancier (and probably in better condition) . The wood and finish look very much the same. I could get some pictures later, but mine came from my great grandmother. It purchased sometime around 1910-1920ish, almost certainly ordered from the Sears catalog. It has markings from a freight handler in Denver, where it was probably delivered and then picked up and taken back to the Nebraska panhandle. About 10 years ago, an estate sale guy said it was white mahogany. I think he valued it around a few hundred dollars for the set with the dresser (there was also a matching nightstand originally, but that disappeared somewhere along the line).

That's mahogany. No clue what it's worth.

Good advice! Berang, if you're not in a rush, have it appraised and see if you can get a good price or even have it sold on commission.

Thanks, that’s what I thought but was sure if I listed it that way somebody was going to correct me.

Stuff like this is often best sold on consignment. Consignment stores like to mark up stuff just because consignment stores are hip and trendy. You may not make quite as much as you would on your own, but you might also do better. It’s hard to say.

Hmmm. I’ll see if I can find somebody. Really trying to clear up some room, but if it might be valuable I’d like to find out.

There is a big consignment store in the Arboretum. If anything, they’ll take it off your hands. See what they’ll offer. Might be worth it just to be rid of it.

From a practical standpoint there are antique beds to decorate an empty nest.  Then there are solid usable ones with the crucial element of being able to find a mattress that actually fits.  Save everyone some trouble by figuring out which this is in advance.

Looks like a representative piece of 20s era furniture. Ebay bid looks like market value , from what I know.  A little lemon oil would probably make it sparkle.

A) can it fit a modern bed?

B) can you find someone in your area that wants it. shipping can be a PITA

Antique furniture is a crapshoot. $200-$1000.? S olid wood vs the laminated crap you find nowadays.

I think it had a queen size mattress on it before it was put away,

I have quite a bit of vintage furniture. Hipsters love this shit. If you live in a hipster friendly city, put it on CL and ho ld out for a few hundred bucks. Your first hits will be from antique shops who will low ball you, but you’ll eventually find a suitable buyer . Or, if you don’t wan to wait, just sell it to an antique shop. You could probably still get $100-150 or so for it.
